The FDA and methylene chloride: where things stand (Oct 2026)

Methylene chloride is a solvent used in some commercial decaf. In late 2023, advocacy groups led by the Environmental Defense Fund petitioned FDA to delist it as a food additive, arguing the Delaney Clause bars carcinogenic additives. The coffee industry, including the National Coffee Association, has opposed a ban.

In May 2026 FDA reopened comments and asked for “practical considerations” for phasing out impacted uses if the petition is granted. Comments closed June 29, 2026. As of today, FDA lists the petition as under review; nothing has been decided. FDA status page · Barista Magazine

What to do meanwhile: if you’d rather skip it, check the solvent-free filter. Many bags just say “decaf” without naming the process. Those show as “not listed” here; ask the roaster.
